Miss Kyriacou is Shade's History leader.
At Shade, our history curriculum is carefully structured to explore local, national and global topics in each year group. This approach enables children to develop a deep and interconnected understanding of history, while recognising how events, cultures and people have shaped Britain and the world we live in today. The curriculum is coherent and progressive, with a strong emphasis on developing key disciplinary skills which are revisited and deepened at every stage of learning.
Please see the 'Curriculum Overview' for more information.
From EYFS through to Year 6, history is taught weekly during Autumn 1, Spring 1 and Summer 1. Through engaging lessons, educational visits and hands-on learning opportunities, we equip our pupils with the knowledge and skills to appreciate the complexities of the past and its impact on the present.
In EYFS, children begin to explore the concept of time and change. They learn about their own lives, families and communities.
In KS1, children focus on learning about significant individuals, events and places from history. They start to develop an understanding of chronology by sequencing events, begin to ask and answer simple questions and explore similarities and differences between past and present.
In KS2, children build on their earlier learning to study a wider range of historical periods in Britain and the wider world. They develop key skills such as analysing evidence, interpreting sources and understanding cause and effect.
